SUMMARY October’s here. And so are the holidays. Bala is blissfully lost in the world of his books until a searing pain shoots through his body and jolts him back to reality. A bite. It was a deep, intense bite. Who could it be? Could it be a monster who has taken shelter in his home? A monster who can’t speak but squeaks with delight? A monster too cute to be punished? Oh, yes! Bala knows this monster. He abhors her, despises her, cusses her tirelessly! She is Meera, his baby sister. Meera has grown, and so have her teeth. She bites, chomps, munches everything in sight – a fact that makes Bala suspect she is a monster in disguise who is here to devour him.  So, when Bala’s mom decides to send him to his grandparents’ at Melagam, he is elated. However, his passion for books is not shared by his parents, whose lives revolve around his baby sister, Meera. Meera too loves books. She loves tearing them, crumpling them, and chewing them up for fun. And she loves feasting on Bala’s books! So, when his parents ask him to spend his summer vacation with his grandparents at Melagam, he doesn’t protest.  He stuffs his books, ten of them, into his bag, and sets off for Melagam with his jolly Navaneeth Uncle and the cautionary Kala Aunty. Raghu Thaatha and Ambu Paati welcome their grandson with immense fervor.  Ambu Paati feeds him with a sumptuous meal of the finest south Indian delicacies, but Bala is hungry for the next incredible tale from his favorite storyteller, Raghu Thaatha. Raghu Thaatha narrates him

It’s the summer holidays, and eight-year-old Putti is on cloud nine. He is visiting his ancestral home in Deolali for the first time, and he can’t wait to be there already and lose himself in its heavenly surroundings. However, his excitement is tinged with a mixture of surprise and shock as his parents forbid him to make any friends there. Why is it so? Are there no human beings in Deolali? Has a tribe of aliens laid siege to it? Is it guarded by ghosts? Werewolves? Humans who can turn into giant evil spiders? No, no, no! Nothing of that sort. It’s just Putti’s hyperactive imagination in action. There are huge trees, fragrant flowers, naughty monkeys, and tamarind pods falling off trees in Deolali. There are hens to be chased, dogs to be cuddled, and lizards to be… A-V-O-I-D-E-D! But charming of all the wonders in Deolali is the little girl, Inu, who lives next to Putti’s ancestral home, behind their wall. And that is why Putti cannot be friends with Inu. Because she is thei
